Joe’s practice includes complex litigated matters such as business torts, construction litigation, real property disputes, tax appeals, ground water contamination claims and business to business disputes. His environmental experience includes defense of mold related injury claims, lead contamination litigation and municipal sewage defect claims. His product liability experience includes defense of catastrophic injury and death claims involving carbon monoxide exposure. He also heads the firm’s RLUIPA team and consults with clients across the country related to religious land use issues.
McGill serves as an elected member of the Board of Commissioners of the State Bar of Michigan. He has been selected by his fellow board members to serve as Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President, and President-Elect of the State Bar of Michigan. As Treasurer, he chaired the Finance and Audit committees, which oversee the financial operations and long-term planning of the State Bar of Michigan. As Secretary, he chaired the Professional Standards Committee, which oversees the Bar’s efforts in the following areas: Character & Fitness, Client Protection Fund, Judicial Ethics, Judicial Qualifications, Lawyers & Judges Assistance, Professional Ethics, and the Unauthorized Practice of Law. During his term as Vice President, he chaired the Communications & Member Services Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and making recommendations regarding all current and proposed new programs, services, and bar activities, as well as making recommendations regarding the Bar’s relationship with local and special interest bar associations and the sections of the Bar.
During his term as President-Elect, he will chair the Public Policy Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and formulating recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on SBM public policy positions on proposed or pending legislation, court rules, and other matters of public policy; coordinating and making recommendations regarding the Bar’s relationship with external entities; and overseeing the State Bar communication policies concerning matters of public policy. Committee oversight includes: Access to Justice Policy; American Indian Law; Civil Procedure & Courts; Civil Procedure & Discovery; Criminal Jurisprudence and Practice; and United States Courts. He also serves on the SBM Executive Committee, which works with SBM staff to provide leadership and vision for the future.
He has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Michigan State Bar Foundation, which provides leadership and funding to improve the justice system in Michigan. Since its inception, the Foundation has made grants totaling more than $210 million. He was elected and served as the Chair of the Representative Assembly for the State Bar of Michigan, which elects its members from every judicial circuit in the state of Michigan. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s 21st Century Practice Task Force. He serves as Emeritus Director and past President of the Catholic Lawyers Society of Detroit, past President of the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers, and past President and Founder of the Michigan Irish American Chamber of Commerce, now known as Irish Network Detroit. Joe carries Martindale Hubbell’s “AV” rating, is a Michigan Super Lawyer, and is rated “Superb” by Avvo. He was the 2013 recipient of the Michigan Irish American Chamber of Commerce’s Business Lawyer Award.

Joe enjoys alpine skiing, SCUBA diving, racquetball, golf, backpacking, and running. He has completed one marathon and several half marathons. He is an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, Big Ten football and basketball. Joe loves to travel. He has lived and studied overseas. He is a certified Master Diver and likes to combine travel with great dive site opportunities. During the summer, he spends time at the family cottage on the shores of Lake Huron, but he enjoys all that the seasons of the Great State of Michigan have to offer.
