Carlos is an Associate Principal with Foley, Baron, Metzger & Juip. He has defended healthcare professionals and institutions for more than 23 years, focusing primarily on complex medical malpractice and premises liability claims. His experience spans cases involving anesthesiology, emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, nursing, podiatry, and radiology. He also has extensive experience defending physicians in state licensing board matters.

Before joining the firm, Carlos worked for a Detroit law firm handling medical malpractice claims for nursing homes, physicians, and hospitals in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Genesee, and Saginaw counties. Previously, he worked for a Livonia law firm defending one of Detroit’s largest health systems in medical malpractice and premises liability cases.

Carlos has held several leadership roles within the American Bar Association. He served as an officer and council member of its Young Lawyers Division from 2004 to 2011 and as a council member of its Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar from 2011 to 2013. From 2020 to 2026, he served as a State Bar of Michigan delegate to the ABA House of Delegates.

Appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2021, Carlos serves as a member of Michigan’s State Board of Ethics. Since 2024, he has authored court rules updates for the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel.

In 2026, Carlos was selected to the Michigan Super Lawyers list. He was also recognized in the 2027 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® for Medical Malpractice Law – Defendants. Previously, he was selected to the Michigan Super Lawyers Rising Stars list from 2010 to 2015.

While in law school, Carlos served as chairperson of the Free Legal Aid Clinic (FLAC), a board member of the Student Trial Advocacy Program (STAP), and a member of the law school’s Student Board of Governors.
