How Medical Providers Can Defend Themselves Before They Get Sued: The Risk Management Edition
FBMJ Partner Sarah Cherry and Nurse Paralegal (soon to be attorney) Jessica Creekmore presented in a webinar to the Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management (MSHRM), on “How Medical Providers Can Defend Themselves Before They Get Sued: The Risk Management Edition.”
Over 115 risk managers, medical providers, and attorneys attended the webinar on September 30, 2026.
Sarah and Jessica discussed how risk managers can implement the recommended changes to medical documentation to help better defend their medical institutions from future lawsuits or at least have better documentations to avoid settling a defensible case. They discussed how policies can be updated to communicate these changes and expectations to providers and to make sure proactive education is provided at all levels. They also discussed disclosures of medical errors, common autopsy issues, audit trails, and medical messaging systems.
If you feel like a presentation similar to this can help your institution, please reach out to Sarah or Jessica. They have different versions of this presentation geared to certain specialties, departments, residents, and nurses.
They will also be presenting at MSHRM’s Fall Conference on October 20, 2026, on Informed Consent. If you will be attending and want them to discuss a specific scenario or issue involving informed consent, please reach out to them.
